Cleaning for Health Workshop: Helping Essential Cleaners Identify Reservoirs for Germs

The ISSA Cleaning for Health Workshop: Helping Essential Cleaners Identify Reservoirs for Germs Workshop provides critical education and training to frontline cleaning workers. This workshop closes gaps in current protections and controls for diseases transmissible by contact, droplet, and aerosol, of which frontline cleaners can be particularly vulnerable.

Core workshop focus:

In-person, three-hour workshop, taught by master trainers in the cleaning industry:

• Identifying and preventing occupational-related infectious diseases, including COVID-19, in industries with high-illness rates, for frontline workers or susceptible populations
• Identifying workplace hazards associated with infectious diseases, including COVID-19

The training course consists of three sessions:

Session 1 – What Does It Mean to Recognize Risk
Session 2 – How Germs Spread and Make People Sick
Session 3 – Human Body and Built Environment Reservoirs Important for the Cleaning Industry

Workshop curriculum topics include:

• Case Studies – The transmission of infectious diseases in the workplace
• Types of infectious disease-causing agents – Bacteria, viruses, fungi
• Chain of infection and signs, symptoms, and transmission of infectious diseases
• What are vaccine-preventable diseases? And how do vaccines protect me?
• A layered hygiene approach – Hand hygiene, surfaces, air, and PPE
• Preventive measures for a safe workplace – What do you need to be aware of?
• Strategies for preparedness & response – Hazard identification and risk assessment
• Strategies to support continuity of operations – Hierarchy of controls
• Seven things to do create a household plan of action to protect those you live with
• Strategies for cleaning equipment, tools, and your vehicle
• Considerations in the workplace – Existing guidance and OSHA standards protect workers, worker rights, and employer responsibilities

Who should attend?

• Frontline workers in the U.S. cleaning industry, including cleaners, janitors, restorers, and remediators
• ISSA-member companies, including building service contractors, residential cleaners, and in-house service providers
• Smaller businesses with 250 or fewer employees
• Six states where the training will take place – Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, and Michigan

An answer of “yes” to any of the following questions indicates the need for your company’s frontline employee(s) to attend this training:

• Does the employee clean restrooms and other areas which may have been dirtied with blood or bodily fluids?
• Does the employee clean high-touch surfaces such as floors, door handles, elevator buttons, handrails, food preparation areas, countertops, bathroom surfaces, desks, shopping carts, toilets, faucets, and sinks?
• Is the employee required to use an EPA-Registered Disinfectant product?
• Is the employee required to pick up trash?
• Does the employee handle dirty laundry?
